GRT-INC.COM > Overview - The GRT, Inc. Process Chemistry Platform

GRT, Inc. (GRT) is commercializing a new process for converting natural gas into higher value liquid fuels and chemicals.

Natural gas will become a major feedstock for liquid fuels and chemical intermediates in the 21st Century. While existing technologies, e.g. Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Gas to Liquids (GTL), may be deployed in specific giant gas fields, our technology is ideally applicable in the many thousands of medium and smaller size stranded gas fields, offshore platforms and new generation FPSO vessels, worldwide. Our technology will appeal to oil & gas companies, petrochemical companies and other specialized users seeking to turn otherwise low value natural gas into higher value products. The environmental benefits of GRT's process include the elimination of gas flaring, potential utilization of biomethane, and the production of no-sulfur fuel.

The major breakthrough (our product) is a chemical transformation platform, including a solid cataloreactant and catalysts, which transform bromine-activated gas components to products. The same basic process can be applied to make a wide variety of important fuels and chemicals from natural gas. Examples include:

gas  clean, sulfur free fuels (gasoline, jet fuel)
   gas  refinery feedstock
gas  basic chemicals (ethylene, propylene, aromatics)

The initial process was developed by GRT employees and University of California scientists through a GRT-funded program at U.C. Santa Barbara. GRT has exclusive worldwide rights to the initial technology as well as the many improvements and new process concepts that have been made in relation to the technology since its invention. In 2004 GRT scaled-up the process in a reactor capable of converting methane to 1 gal/day of liquid fuel.

Our patented "Zone Reactor" simplifies the gas conversion process, potentially reducing cost and increasing safety.

Since 2003, GRT has maintained revenue-generating strategic R & D relationships with Fortune 500 chemical companies to co-develop specific chemical processes. GRT expects to expand the chemical co-development programs with other strategic partners and develop additional processes using the GRT platform.

Data from our bench scale and 1 gal/day reactors have been used to focus our work on improvements needed for commercial units and to generate increasingly refined cost estimates. In scaling up to a 100 - 1,000 bbl/day production prototype, the subsequent risk for commercial scale facilities by late 2008 will be minimized. Successful start-up and operation of a production prototype fuels facility will be the final demonstration needed for customers to begin utilizing the GRT technology.

Worldwide demand for fuels and chemicals will continue to rise throughout the 21st Century. With the expected sustained high price of oil the feedstock advantage of low cost natural gas, utilizing GRT's technologies, will provide our customers with a competitive advantage for monetizing their gas.

GRT has sound technology and business development strategies for Fuels and Chemicals. Our 21st Century Gas Conversion Technology is the right technology at the right time.

GRT is aggressively developing processes for producing gasoline and other fuels from natural gas based upon our patented solid reactant chemical technology platform. This breakthrough in gas conversion technology may enable our customers to:

Efficiently utilize natural gas rather than oil as a feedstock to competitively produce fuels and chemicals.
Reduce plant capital costs allowing small plants to be economically constructed.
Utilize extremely low cost natural gas reserves that could not otherwise be monetized including offshore associated gas, land based "stranded gas", biomethane and coal bed methane, even with significant impurity content.

These benefits come in the wake of increasing environmental demands in the 21st century and will provide our customers a significant competitive opportunity in both the enormous
gasoline market and for products in the chemical intermediate market representing more than $100 billion in annual sales. Both of these markets are growing at approximately 5% per year.

Our process, unlike Fischer-Tropsch (FT)- based GTL technology or LNG, has the potential to be the most economical option for use in the medium size and smaller stranded gas fields and offshore oil production facilities. It offers users a means to improve the environment and turn otherwise underutilized natural gas into higher value products.

We are fast tracking the development of our technology through the design, construction and operation of a production prototype plant to be operational within two-three years. This unit will be designed for use on oil production platforms to convert the associated gas to 500-10,000 barrels of liquid product per day. In parallel we will continue to move towards specific chemical process pilots with our other Fortune 500 strategic partners.
